- Description
Sapele Veneer
Additional name:
Sapelli
Origin:
West and East Africa, from the Ivory Coast to the Cameroons and eastward through Zaire to Uganda.
Color and Characteristics:
The sapwood of sapele tends to whitish or pale yellow and is distinct from the heartwood, which ranges in color from a medium to dark reddish or purplish brown. Grain depends on the type of cut, interesting effects can be achieved: quarter-slicing yields a plain veneer pattern with the glossy stripes typical of Sapelli, flat slicing yields veneer with a flowery structure. Sapelli enables a room to have an exotic touch of African atmosphere; can also be used as an intentional contrast to modern elements.
Application:
Sapelli is an exotic, although in no way rare, type of wood. In the furniture, door and paneling sector, the classical flat- and quarter-sliced veneer is used. Sapelli is an interesting alternative to light-colored oak and beech flooring in the parquet sector.
